about

A year or so after the extraordinary experiment – Da Whole Thing @ Version City – that took place under the auspices of Stubborn Records in 1997 – 98 and which resulted in the birth of a new subgenre Ska Noire, the eclectic New York supergroup assembled again, this time in a fully equipped 24 track analog facility, to record its second album Tooth.

Tooth is a concept album. Its 13 tracks reflect the frenetic pulse of life in New York at the turn of the century against the backdrop of the impending Y2K (remember what a sham that was). It drew its mystical inspiration from American playwright Sam Shepard’s play The Tooth Of Crime, commenting on a stagnant mainstream culture and proffering a caution. Perhaps it was ahead of its time, as Victor Rice pointed out in an interview ‘the world isn’t ready for this record’.

25 years later, mother nature continues to devastate, wars continue to rage, bankers are still wankers, people are still shackled to their desks working for the man, still jilted in love, and there are still those who are there to clean up the shit we create, Life, it seems, played itself out like a piece of absurd theatre by Mr. Shepard to the soundtrack of Tooth.

Da Whole Thing boasts a boss rhythm section comprising of SKA MOB behemoths Vic Ruggiero (keyboards, guitar and vocals), Agent Jay Nugent (guitar), Victor Rice (bass), Kwon Chong (percussion and vocals), Patrick Carayannis (stick bass and vocals) and Irish jazz maestro Darren Beckett (drums) paired with a horn section featuring Matt Schulman (trumpet), Franz Carries (trombone) and led by the arranger extraordinaire Ian Russell (saxophones, flute and piccolo). Lead vocals were shared between Lief Nielsen, Chris Murray, Patrick Carayannis and Vic Ruggiero. There were a couple of cameo appearances from guitarists the avant-garde Rob Price and the legendary Simon Chardier.

The songs were recorded live off the floor, expertly engineered by Michael Ciati (Coyote Studios) and produced by Chris Murray and Victor Rice. They cover an amalgam of styles, from straight-up Ska to odd time Reggae, Free Jazz to Noisecore, Rock and Country ballads and capped with a solo piano track where Vic Ruggiero thought for a moment he was Keith Jarrett. These recording sessions resulted in this unique collection of tunes, each like a scene in a musical play, performed by a cast of highly versatile musicians that together create the inimitable sound of Da Whole Thing.
